The Marvel Cinematic Universe has maintained a sterling reputation during Phase Three, releasing a slew of critical and box office successes. Moviegoers still haven't recovered from the shocking events of Avengers: Infinity War, and are eager to get some answers with Avengers 4. But there's other Marvel installment coming first, introducing the shared universe's most powerful hero in the process. Captain Marvel has largely been a mystery, but the first image have recently popped up from the highly anticipated blockbuster. A trailer has just dropped, showing the wild 90's world Brie Larson's Carol Danvers will inhabit when it arrives. Check it out.
Does anyone else need time to catch their breath? Because while fans knew about the bare bones of Captain Marvel's story, there is no way they could have predicted the type of project that the blockbuster appears to be.
While Captain Marvel will introduce Brie Larson's Carol Danvers to moviegoers for the first time, it looks like unlike any origin story from the previous phases of the shared universe. We will presumably meet Captain Marvel when she crash lands back on Earth, after an unknown time working with the Starforce and gaining fantastic abilities from the Kree. She crashes directly into a Blockbusters Video (RIP), and we see as she attempts to navigate Earth in the 1990's. It appears that the movie will focus on Carol's memories and past, as she doesn't remember growing up on Earth and joining the Air Force-- all of which appear in brief shots in the trailer.
WithCaptain Marvel's psychological focus sound like a great way to show her background in a non-conventional way. This will also likely give audiences a deeper understand of the character. Considering how late into the MCU Carol Danvers is arriving, it's a great framing device that will allow fans to quickly become attached to her-- before Captain Marvel eventually appears in Avengers 4.
Aside from bringing the title character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel will also expand the background of S.H.I.E.L.D., with both Nick Fury and Phil Coulson returning to the silver screen for the prequel blockbuster. The trailer shows a great look at Samuel L. Jackson's de-aged and two-eyed character, who was the connective thread between various franchises during Marvel's first two phases.
Aside from the Blockbusters shout out, there are a few other big moments that will excite Marvel fans in the first Captain Marvel trailer. Jude Law's Mar-Vell / Walter Lawson looks thoroughly creepy with his yellow eyes, and it's unclear if he'll be a friend or foe throughout the upcoming movie. You can also see the device that Nick Fury used to contact Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War's mid-credits scene. Captain Marvel looks rife with crossovers and references, which should help satiate the rabid Marvel fandom as they continue to wait for Avengers 4.
Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies. You can check out the movie's awesome new poster on the next page.
